3 Fun Tips To Get Your Kids To Brush | Kids Toothbrush Club
Welcome to Mommy’s Salon
I recently discovered a fun new “game” that made our morning frenzy a breeze. I’ve never had much trouble getting them to brush their teeth, but this fun new activity makes them run to the bathroom every morning. I call it Mommy’s Salon.
It started because my son is Autistic and we are teaching him about social language, having two-way dialogue conversations. I would pretend that the bathroom is a hair salon and I would ask him questions about himself while I styled his hair and brushed his teeth each day. It began with simple questions like “Tell me your name,” and “Do you have any pets?” But then it became a fun game.
Now he and his little sister fight to go first to get their teeth brushed because they want to hear what questions I will ask them. “Do you work in the circus?” “Are you a real, live fairy?” There is no fighting and no bribing and our house is stress-free in the morning. How long does this routine take? Only 5 minutes per child; 2 minutes for teeth and 3 minutes for hair. And what is the best part for me? They “tip” me in kisses.
The Great Brush Race
One of our favorite brushing games we play at bedtime is a brushing race. Ready, set, go! The child that brushes the longest, and there is a two-minute minimum, gets to pick out the bedtime story. Since Jack doesn’t want to read another Pinkalicious story and Zoe doesn’t want another Super hero book, there is serious motivation; and these kids are competitive!
Stuck on Stickers!
Their other favorite reward is their Jake and Judy stickers and calendar. Since they each have their own sticker chart, they compete with each other to see who has more star stickers. The winner at the end of each week gets a trip to the dollar store. Did I mention they were competitive?
These fun tips work in our house, but you can make up you own ways to motivate your kids to want to brush their teeth. They will soon learn that it isn’t a chore to be dreaded, but can be a fun activity that will become a lifelong healthy habit. “Because every child deserves a healthy smile.”
